“Stay clear of the beach. He WILL find you…”  – Ragust the Fisherman

What would otherwise be a serene and idyllic setting, the northern beaches and marshlands of the Taranach river are stalked by a madman of tremendous size and savagery. Known as “The Rock Warden”, this solitary individual has been known to chase down anyone who he finds along the shoreline, pelting them with small boulders and screaming incomprehensibly from enraged, frothy lips. He is particularly protective of the stones that litter the waterline, and has come charging out of nowhere when a visitor to the beach has done no more than pick up a rock. Contrarily, encounters have also been reported where he merely watched a terrified wanderer from a distance, perhaps judging if some trespass had been committed, and then turning away and disappearing into the overgrown and boulder strewn landscape.

Like much that is associated with the Taranach river, the Rock Warden’s story is a mystery. Who is this gargantuan, insensible defender of the beach? Where does he sleep? What does he eat? The more terrible stories about him describe him devouring those he catches, but aside from the found remains of raw fish, muscles and river weed, nothing has been proven. While the threat of being caught by the Rock Warden may seem a tale told to scare children, the damage he can cause is real enough. Some years ago a band of locals decided to confront him and rid the shoreline of his presence once and for all. There were no deaths, but the expedition resulted in multiple broken limbs and concussions in the party from the encounter, and witnesses described the scene “as if a great Mountain Bear went mad and tossed the men around like so much hog fuel into the burner”.
